Autism Insurance Coverage Per State
Link: http://www.doh.wa.gov/hsqa/sunrise/Documents/Autism.pdf
Not all states require insurance companies to cover the medical costs associated with autism therapies, in fact only 35 of 50 states do. According to the National Conference of State Legislation website only 23 states specifically require insurance to cover autism costs, while the remaining 12 only have limited autism support. States with Autism Insurance Laws:
— Arizona - Massachusetts
- Colorado - Missouri
- Connecticut - Montana
- Florida - Nevada
- Illinois - New Hampshire
- Indiana - New Jersey
- Iowa - New Mexico
- Kansas - Pennsylvania
- Kentucky - South Carolina
- Louisianan - Texas
- Maine - Vermont
- Wisconsin
" Other states may require limited coverage for autism under mental health coverage or other laws." Their website lists the states individually and what the laws are per state:

Michigan recently denied autism insurance coverage Dec 2010 http://www.theautismnews.com/2010/12/23/autism-parents-battle-on-backers-aim-to-reintroduce-bill-to-require-insurance-coverage/
In Washington State, they are cutting what meager services are available for adults. And the state's Department of Health even admits that most children don't have access to what autism therapies are available. I've attached the file below.
"There are a few programs that provide limited treatment to a small number of children with autism. These programs include:
• Infant and Toddler Early Intervention Program’s (ITEIP) Birth to Three Program
• Programs through the Department of Social and Health Services
• Department of Health’s Children with Special Health Care Needs Program
• Microsoft’s private health plan
• Neurodevelopmental therapy services under Medicaid
• Other coverage under Medicaid
These programs are not generally available to a large portion of the population of children with ASD."
This is an absolute shame for Washington State. Help support autism insurance reform in Washington State http://www.washingtonautismadvocacy.org/updates/about/
